Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) for Erie County 2013

20080127_img_2633

For many years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has been a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from farmers. Through the CSA, farmers offer a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of fruits and vegetables, but other products may be included. Consumers purchase a share or “membership” and in return receive a ration of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. This arrangement benefits both the farmer and the consumer in many ways.

Below is a list of CSA’s in Erie County with updated information for 2013:

This is looking like maybe more of a list of Farmer's Markets, rather than direct contacts for CSA farms? It's an awesome resource for Farmer's Markets - I just wanted to throw that out there as a point of clarification for anyone who is new to the CSA model. There are a few local CSAs that have a regular presence at Farmer's Markets (like Native Offerings at Elmwood-Bidwell) and other city locations (Promised Land has several drop-off location in Buffalo), but my experience has been that sign ups are done in direct contact with the farm, especially since CSAs seems to often fill up early in the season. There are lots of options with pick-ups directly at the farm location, too, which can be great for u-pick options (big plug here for Thorpe's in East Aurora, best organic strawberries in WNY) and for additional share options like fruit (there are more veggie CSAs than fruit), plus direct-from-farm meat, eggs, dairy, etc. Localharvest.org is a great resource for CSAs, and Eatwild.com is awesome for other local foodie options. And this great list above is fantastic for Farmer's Markets, which are always so fun. :)
